Before writing code we observe the process where it actually happens. More often than not the biggest gain comes from simplifying the process rather than from the software itself — we remove the unnecessary steps first, then automate what remains.
External systems go down. Queues, idempotent operations and automatic retries make sure a temporary outage never turns into lost data.
